Hike: Table Mountain

Wednesday, May 9, 2012
On our first full day in Cape Town we took a bus tour around the city, which also took us to Table Mountain. When we saw it, we knew we were going to have to come back the next day and hike to the top.

Here's the Fodor's description of Table Mountain:
"Along with Victoria Falls on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, this is one of southern Africa's most beautiful and impressive natural wonders. The views from its summit are awe-inspiring. The mountain rises more than 3,500 feet above the city, and its distinctive flat top is visible to sailors 65 km (40 mi) out to sea. In summer, when the southeaster blows, moist air from False Bay funnels over the tabletop, condensing in the colder, higher air to form a cloud "tablecloth." Legend attributes this low-lying cloud to a pipe-smoking contest between the devil and Jan van Hunks, a pirate who settled on Devil's Peak. The devil lost, and the cloud serves to remind him of his defeat."

For some perspective, here's the base of the mountain where the buses stop and the cable car starts.

Departing on the bus. Such a windy day! Cape Town is known for it's extremely strong winds due to the funneling of air down/through the mountains.

Clifton Beach

The "12 Disciples", behind Table Mountain.

Clifton Beach had some amazing hotels and shops.

We stopped in Clifton for a light, late lunch and some drinks. What a view!

Great Salad-- Wish I could remember everything in it.

Grilled Calamari was on every menu.

Start of the hike.

Long, long way to go!

Nope we're not there yet Ross...

Pictures at the top tomorrow!
